The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that is formed from the coming together of several other nerves that exit from each side of the low back (lumbar spine).  All these individual nerve form the sciatic nerve in the buttock region.  

 

In some people, their sciatic nerve passes right through a muscle called the piriformis muscle.  This piriformis muscle can be tight or spasming in some patients and this will cause buttock pain only.  If you're one of the people born with the sciatic nerve piercing right through the muscle, a tight or spasming piriformis muscle can then cause pain that shoots from the buttock down the leg.
